Getting Started on Mercor: What to Expect
May 14, 2026
Mercor is the most specialized of the three platforms on this site. It’s focused on connecting skilled professionals with AI labs, research teams, and high-growth startups — specifically for AI training data work and remote technical projects.
The Mercor model
Like micro1, Mercor uses an AI interview to assess your skills before matching you with work. The interview takes about 20 minutes. It’s designed to evaluate technical depth — Mercor is primarily useful if you have real expertise in a specific area. Domain experts in math, science, medicine, law, coding, and other fields tend to do well here.
The work itself varies. Some projects are AI training data tasks — evaluating model outputs, writing examples, rating responses. Others are longer-term technical contracts. The AI training work tends to be flexible and asynchronous; the contract work can look more like a traditional remote job with defined hours and deliverables.
What makes Mercor different
Two things stand out. First, Mercor takes no cut from your earnings — what the client pays is what you receive. That’s genuinely unusual for a platform that does placement. Second, the matching is skill-based in a way that means you mostly only see work you’re qualified for. You won’t spend time filtering through listings that have nothing to do with what you do.
The platform is newer and the volume of available work fluctuates more than on WFH Team. But the quality of what’s available tends to be high, and the pay rates for AI training work with specialized expertise can be meaningfully above what you’d find on general freelance platforms.
